About the National Black Women’s Justice Institute (NBWJI)

The National Black Women’s Justice Institute (NBWJI) researches the criminalization of Black women, girls, and gender-expansive people and elevates innovative, community-led solutions to address it. Through rigorous research and capacity-building initiatives, NBWJI aims to transform the criminal legal system, promote policy changes, and dismantle the racist, patriarchal, and punitive systems that harm directly impacted Black women and girls. We envision a society where healing—not punishment—is upheld as justice.

NBWJI operates with a Black feminist intersectional lens, guided by our organizational values of collaboration, growth, rigor, innovation, and accountability. We value a range of experiences in people’s educational backgrounds and encourage people who have been directly impacted by the criminal or juvenile legal systems and share our commitment to social justice and transformative systems change to apply.
